Knowing what causes clogged drains in your home and knowing how to keep them clean will keep you from calling in plumber. Even better, it is easier to keep sinks and tubs clean and tidy when you can keep drains free. Less likely to be covered in piles of all kinds of weapons that can backfire and cause harm. Shower drains are often clogged with sticky substances such as toothpaste, shaving cream and hair that all collect in the drain pipe. Kitchen sinks have the same problems as oil and grease that thickens and collects over time.
DO-IT-YOURSELF
Bathroom sinks and tubs look different for different reasons than kitchen sinks, so you have to treat them in different ways. For cleaning bathroom drains, common salt can be included in your tool box. Pour one tablespoon of salt down the drain of the bathtub, then pour 1⁄4 cup of white vinegar and let it sit for an hour. Hot water then flows to remove the loosened material from the drain. Repeat this for best results.
HOTTER THAN USUAL WATER
It may seem obvious, but simply running hot water down your kitchen and bathroom drains at least a week can go a long way in keeping them clean and tidy. For the kitchen sink, hot water will help dissolve and remove light oil deposits. Bath water is also very hot, so you don’t want to use that hot water to wash your hands and eyes.
USE COLD WATER WISELY
However when handling the garbage, pour plenty of cold water down the drain not hot. Cold water dries out the grease and oil so that it breaks down as you drive it out, while hot water melts and softens the oil, forcing it to lubricate the inside of the drain. Only use hot water after washing to remove the grease that builds up when cleaning pots and pans.
